About the role

Description

As a Gardener volunteer, you will be supporting the staff team in a service in Wandsworth to develop and maintain their onsite gardens. Working with the staff and young people in the service, you will create a plan to put in a vegetable plot and create an interesting and relaxing space within the service. 

Summary

  • Support staff and young people to plan, set up and maintain garden space, and vegetable allotments at Centrepoint services
  • Manage the garden at the supported accommodation, keeping it presentable and a place that young people would want to spend their time
  • Where possible, involve young people in the general management of the garden, teaching them about planting and care for plants/veg
  • Engage with staff about specific tasks that might need completing in the garden throughout the year
  • Engage with young people about what they might want to see in the garden and provide support to them in achieving it
  • Share your passion with our young people to increase their skills and confidence with gardening
  • Work cooperatively with other staff and volunteers
  • Observe and adhere to Centrepoint policies relevant to the team and be familiar with emergency procedures in case of fire, serious accident or violence
     

Requirements

Volunteers should meet the following criteria:

ESSENTIAL:

  • Enthusiasm and a passion for gardening 
  • Ability to communicate confidently and clearly with young people, other volunteers and staff
  • Understanding of the importance of teamwork; commitment to being part of a team
  • Experience working with young people or disadvantaged groups is preferable 
  • Able to work unsupervised
  • Resilience, patience and an ability to motivate young people to participate in new activities
  • Ability to remain calm when involved with challenging individuals and situations
  • A commitment to demonstrating Centrepoint’s values 
  • A commitment to complete the necessary volunteer training sessions 


     DESIRABLE:

  • Understanding of the issues – practical and emotional – facing young people
  • Good communication skills
  • A commitment to demonstrating Centrepoint’s values

What we need from you

Before starting the role we will require the following:

  • Undergo Centrepoint Enhanced DBS process – we are unable to accept DBS certificates from other organisations
  • Provide a minimum of three forms of ID to support your DBS application
  • Provide the name and contact information of two people who can provide a reference for you
  • Undergo Centrepoint core induction training
  • Undergo Coaching Mindset training within 6 months of commencing your role

You may also be required to undertake further role specific training courses throughout the duration of your volunteering role.
