About the role

Description

We are looking for a Gardening Volunteer to support the development and maintenance of the greenspaces at our Bradford Training Centre, alongside our staff teams and resident young people. Our garden has great potential, but needs the support of a volunteer to help bring it to life and put in place plans to help it thrive! As part of the role, you’ll also have the opportunity to develop young people’s interest in gardening, from growing vegetables to growing the tallest sunflower!

We will be holding an open day at Bradford Training Centre, Coates Street, BD5 7DL on Wednesday 10 July from 10.30am – 2.30pm if you would like to come along and find out more

Summary

  • Monitoring the health of all plants and greenscapes
  • Dig, plant and weed flowerbeds and borders
  • Watering and feeding plants
  • Trimming trees and shrubs
  • Fertilising and mowing lawns
  • Weeding garden and keeping green spaces and walkways clear 
  • Control pests that damage plants
  • Safe use of equipment such as lawnmowers and hedge trimmers

Requirements

Volunteers should meet the following criteria:

Essential

  • Enthusiasm and a passion for gardening
  • Ability to communicate confidently and clearly with young people, other volunteers and staff
  • Understanding of the importance of teamwork; commitment to being part of a team
  • Experience working with young people or disadvantaged groups is preferable
  • Able to work unsupervised
  • Resilience, patience and an ability to motivate young people to participate in new activities
  • Ability to remain calm when involved with challenging individuals and situation

Desirable

  • Understanding of the practical and emotional issues facing young people
  • Good communication skills
  • A commitment to demonstrating Centrepoint’s values

What we need from you

Before starting the role we will require the following:

  • Undergo Centrepoint Enhanced DBS process - we are unable to accept DBS certificates from other organisations
  • Provide ID to support your DBS application
  • Provide the name and contact information of two people who can provide a reference for you
  • Undergo Centrepoint core induction training and Lifewise training
  • Undergo Coaching Mindset training within 6 months of commencing the volunteering role 

You may also be required to undertake further role specific training courses throughout the duration of your volunteering role.
