Cook & Eat Volunteer (Sunderland)

Team: Support & Housing

Location: Sunderland

Support and supervision from: Support and Housing / Activities team

Time Commitment: 3–6 hours per week depending upon the needs of young people and services.

As a Cook & Eat volunteer, you will be supporting our Support and Housing team in Sunderland deliver a brand new project with young families. As part of this role, you will be chopping, dicing, slicing and helping young families gain a key life skill in the process!

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Consult young people on the types of activities they are interested in
  • Encourage and motivate young people to engage and participate in activities
  • Deliver sessions to young people within supported accommodation
  • Support staff with delivery of Centrepoint organised activities

Volunteers should meet the following criteria:

  • Food Hygiene certificate or the willingness and ability to gain one
  • Cooking experience and confidence in the kitchen
  • Understanding of the importance of teamwork; commitment to being part of a team
  • Experience/confidence in activities that young people may be keen to engage in
  • Knowledge or willingness to learn about the range of opportunities in the local area that young people can access
  • Willing to engage in a variety of activities
  • Experience working with young people or disadvantaged groups is preferable
  • Able to work unsupervised
  • Resilience, patience and an ability to motivate young people to participate in new  activities
  • Ability to remain calm when involved with challenging individuals and situations

Desirable

  • Chef/cooking qualifications
  • Understanding of the issues – practical and emotional – facing young people
  • Good communication skills, written and oral
  • A commitment to demonstrating Centrepoint’s values

Support for volunteers 

  • Structured induction and training
  • Ongoing support and supervision from the volunteering team
  • Ongoing support and supervision from your supervisor
  • Access to further training
  • Travel and other reasonable expenses reimbursed
